What Happened

Mike Riddering and Valentin his Burkinabe associate went to Ouagadougou on January 15, 2016 to meet and pick up a team of Short Term Missionaries coming from the U.S. to work with Mike at the Les Ailes de Refuge Orphanage in Burkina Faso.

Mike and Valentin arrived in Ouagadougou early and went to Cappuccino Café, a coffee shop across from the Splendid Hotel. These locations came under attack by Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM).

Amy Riddering, Mike’s wife, received a call from Pastor Valentin urgently requesting prayer; before he could complete his call the phone went dead.

It appears that Pastor Valentin was somehow separated from Mike during the attack and hid somewhere in the Cappuccino Café.

Several hours after his urgent call for prayer, Amy was notified that Valentin had been found and rescued by security forces. However, Pastor Valentin had no information on Mike Riddering’s whereabouts.

Another Sheltering Wings Missionary, Philip Matheny, who arrived back in Burkina Faso on January 14, immediately began searching for Mike. He found his body in a morgue on January 16, 2016.

Mike leaves behind his wife Amy Riddering, and four children. Haley age 23, Delaney age 19, Biba age 15, Moise age 4.

A fund has been set up to assist Amy Riddering and her family.

About Mike Riddering

Michael James Riddering was born February 21, 1970, in Illinois. He graduated from Fort Lauderdale Christian High School in 1988. From 1998-2005 Mike worked at Midnight Express Powerboats. From 2005 -2010 Mike worked at his own business named Ohana Boats Inc. Mike Riddering and his family became members of Hollywood Community Church, in Hollywood Florida. In 2011 Mike, his wife Amy, and their daughter Delaney moved to Yako, Burkina Faso to do mission work. Haley paused her education for a year to serve with her family before returning to continue her education. Eventually Delaney moved back to the U.S. to continue her education as well.

The Ridderings’ have faithfully followed Jesus. Since their arrival in Burkina Faso, they have been actively doing their part to fulfill the great commission, by proclaiming and demonstrating the Gospel.

The Ridderings’ and their team care for about 400 orphaned children, provide direct assistance to disenfranchised widows, help to direct the operations of schools. Funding for these programs comes from the generous support of people of good will that sponsor children, and donate funds to carry out the work.

In addition, the Ridderings’ adopted two children since their arrival in Burkina Faso; Biba age 15, Moise age 4.

They were looking forward to continuing to working in Burkina Faso and raising their children together. Tragically and unexpectedly, Mike’s life was cut short. We grieve with Amy and her family, and all who knew Mike.

As individuals and community, it is difficult to know how to respond. That is why we set up the Michael James Riddering Memorial Fund. It is one tangible way we can all honor Mike, bless Amy and her family, and grieve together.

Thank you for your kindness, prayers, and goodwill.

We established this fund to help ensure that Amy and her family face fewer financial challenges in the time to come. 100% of these funds will go to Amy Riddering for expenses. (There is a small fee for credit and debit transactions, charged by the credit card companies that will come out of the donation amount, when encountered.)

Please keep Amy and her family in your prayers.
