Mariam de Fagotoda resides in a village in the southwestern area of Burkina Faso. The climate is harsh and the living conditions are very difficult. Couple that with extreme poverty and you can only begin to imagine what life is like for Mariam. She is the youngest of eight children. They share a house made of mud bricks. If they are lucky they have a woven mat to sleep on. Her chores include fetching water from the well, gathering wood, doing laundry and caring for younger children in the courtyard of her extended family. When she is not in school she may help with the planting and harvesting of her family who cultivates for a living. Mariam loves going to school. This year (2025 - 2026) she is in the eleventh grade. Mariam knows it is a privilege to attend school. Not many girls are as fortunate. She hopes she will be able to continue her education but knows her mama struggles to pay school fees each year.
