It is clear that João  is a young boy with a gentle spirit who finds joy in creative outlets and community connection despite his family's severe financial hardships. His involvement with Projeto Esperança is a vital "safe haven" for him, providing both spiritual guidance and a physical outlet through soccer.

 João is  11 years old and in the 7th grade.   He lives in a multi-generational home headed by his mother.  He has 4 siblings and one brother in law.  The family resides together out of financial necessity; his mother works as a housekeeper, and his older siblings are in "drastic" financial need.

João is described as a sweet, polite and compliant child.  He loves to play soccer, attends Bible Study and drawing  on raining days.
