Djouma
Djouma is a bright and engaging little girl. She was born in 2013 and this year (2025-2026) she is in the seventh grade. She loves to go to school and knows that it is a privilege to be able to go to school.
Djouma’s mother passed away in 2019. Djouma is the youngest of three children. The children live with their father in a small rural village. The family lives in a small mud-brick house without access to electricity or running water. They live in the courtyard of the father’s extended family.
Djouma’s father is a farmer. He plants corn and millet as his main crops and also plants some cotton and sesame. Most of the planting and harvesting is done by hand but Djouma’s father does have an oxen to help him to plow his fields when it is time to plant.
When the rains are good, the family knows that they will have enough to eat but when there is not enough rain, often the family will suffer.
